Historic Breakthrough at the Brenner Base Tunnel

On 18 September 2025, the first of three tubes of the Brenner Base Tunnel was fully broken through, connecting Austria and Italy for the first time via the exploratory tunnel. The milestone was celebrated by over 1,000 guests, including the EU Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker, and numerous representatives from politics and the tunnel construction industry. At 64 km, the Brenner Base Tunnel will become the world’s longest railway tunnel, shifting millions of tons of goods from road to rail and supporting sustainable European transport.
Amberg Engineering at the Forefront
Amberg Engineering AG leads the engineering consortium responsible for planning the Austrian side of the tunnel since 2014, covering design, tendering, and execution design of major sections H21, H41, and H53. The project features two main tunnel tubes, an exploratory tunnel for operational purposes, cross-passages every 330 m, and three emergency stations to ensure safety. With TBMs and conventional tunnelling, over 42 km of exploratory tunnel have been completed. The final breakthrough of the main tubes is expected in 2026, followed by M&E installations and commissioning. Amberg Engineering and its team are proud to contribute to this century-defining infrastructure project.
