Extension of U9 METRO LINE MUNICH

Amberg Engineering is contributing to the planning of the southern section of Munich’s new U9 metro line. Since 2024, our company has been working in a joint venture with partner firms Schüssler-Plan and ISP ZT on service phases 1 (basic evaluation) and 2 (preliminary design).
The new line will begin within a structural provision (VHM) at Munich Central Station, which is being constructed as part of the city’s Second Main Line project. Initial construction works have already started in parts of the new station concourse.
Within this provision, two tracks are planned for the U9 at a depth of approximately 30 meters, running beneath existing urban transport and utility infrastructure. The project includes two new metro stations, notably the new Implerstrasse/Poccistrasse station, which is already firmly integrated into the design. In addition, an underground depot and three emergency exits are foreseen.
To connect the new line with the existing U3 and U6, the tunnels will be linked via several underground track junctions. This requires the construction of complex trumpet structures, which must be built within densely developed urban areas under highly constrained surface access conditions.
The southern end of the planned line will feature a transition structure in the Wackersbergerstrasse area, where the U9 will merge into the existing U6 network. Another key interface is the planned connection of Brüdermühlstrasse station to the U3 tunnel alignment.
Amberg Engineering is currently responsible for the planning of the tunnels, which will be constructed using enclosed tunnelling methods. Various technical solutions for the required trumpet structures are being developed as part of this work.
