In their paper published in the Journal of «Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology» (Elsevier), M. Rehbock and T. Jesel from Amberg Engineering share their experiences with fault induced rock bursts and micro-tremors during the construction of the MFS Faido, an infrastructure of the Gotthard Base Tunnel. Although rock bursts can be very dangerous for tunnel workers, fortunately in the present case no accident or work interruption occurred. The paper describes the chronology of the seismic events, the impact on the tunnel construction and the mitigation measures.
