Precision Clearance Measurements for the Hokuriku Shinkansen Extension (Kanazawa to Tsuruga)

Demanding Standards in Railway Safety

The Hokuriku Shinkansen, a vital part of Japan's high-speed rail network, recently extended its reach with a 125-kilometre addition from Kanazawa to Tsuruga. This extension not only strengthens connectivity to the Hokuriku region but also supports regional economic growth and tourism by making the area more accessible.

To ensure the safe operation of high-speed trains, clearance measurements were critical during the construction process. Meeting the exacting standards for approval in Japan, the project demanded high precision and reliability throughout. At the core of this achievement was the Amberg GRP 5000 system, which played a pivotal role in ensuring compliance with these rigorous requirements.

Why Precision Matters

Clearance measurements are a critical step in railway construction approval, ensuring that infrastructure meets strict spatial requirements for safe and efficient train operations. These measurements verify the horizontal and vertical distances between the designed track alignment and adjacent infrastructure objects such as neighbouring tracks, signals, utility poles, overhead lines, tunnels, platforms, and other structures.

The GRP 5000 system rose to this challenge. Deployed by Japan Railway Construction, Transport and Technology Agency (JRTT), with support from Amberg’s trusted partner Nepro, the system provided highly accurate data over a year-long inspection period. This data was rigorously analysed and independently verified by key stakeholders, including West Japan Railway Company (JR-West) and JRTT, leading to the system’s approval as a reliable and suitable solution.

Proven Performance

The approval of the GRP 5000 system highlights its exceptional performance and reliability, earning the trust of one of the world’s most demanding railway industries. The independent checks and rigorous analysis underscore the confidence stakeholders place in the system's ability to meet stringent clearance requirements, ensuring the safety and reliability of the Hokuriku Shinkansen extension.
Amberg Technologies recognises the crucial role of Nepro in supporting the Japanese market, ensuring the system was tailored to meet local standards and needs.
