Major Milestone at the Brenner Base Tunnel
Wilma, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) achieved a major breakthrough at the Brenner Base Tunnel (BBT) on August 25, 2026 connecting construction lot H53 with the neighbouring lot H41. With this breakthrough, the first main tunnel is now continuous from Innsbruck to the southern portal.
For Amberg Engineering, this marks another significant milestone in a project we have been supporting since 2014. As lead partner of the engineering joint venture, we are working together with Lombardi Engineering Group, Müller + Hereth, OBERMEYER Infrastructure and hbpm Engineers Ltd. on the design of this major European infrastructure project.
The breakthrough is the result of many years of engineering, planning and collaboration across disciplines. We would like to recognise the client, GALLERIA DI BASE DEL BRENNERO- BRENNER BASISTUNNEL BBT SE, our partners, the construction contractor and, in particular, the teams working on site for their continued commitment and outstanding work.
This milestone marks an important step towards completing one of Europe’s major railway infrastructure projects. We are proud to contribute our expertise to the Brenner Base Tunnel and to a new rail connection strengthening the link between Austria and Italy and further connecting Europe.
