Geotechnical Challenges in a Changing Environment

In 1925, Karl Terzaghi published Erdbaumechanik auf bodenphysikalischer Grundlage in Vienna, a work widely regarded as the foundation of modern soil mechanics. To mark the 100th anniversary of this milestone, the Austrian Geotechnical Society and the Austrian Society for Geomechanics will jointly commemorate this significant moment in geotechnical engineering.

With the establishment of the first Institute and Laboratory for Soil Mechanics at TU Wien in 1929, Vienna became a central location in the development of the field. Reflecting this heritage, the 21st International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ICSMGE) will take place in Vienna in June 2026 under the motto “Where it all began.” The conference will be held in person to encourage direct exchange and professional networking.
Leading specialists will deliver state‑of‑the‑art lectures, and for the first time in the history of the conference series, a plenary session organised by the European Federation of Foundation Contractors (EFFC) will highlight industry initiatives aimed at tackling climate change and reducing the construction sector’s CO₂ footprint.
